Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art with origins dating back more than 2000 years.

Literally translated Taekwondo means the “art of striking with the hand and foot.” However, art is a poor translation, more appropriate is “philosophy” or “way of life”.

Taekwondo practitioners are known in the martial arts world for their kicking skills, the training consisting of approximately 80% feet and 20% hand techniques.

As most beginners find it easier to use their hands than feet this emphasis means the development of good balance abilities.

Taekwondo is also a martial art sport with regular local, national and international tournaments.  It is officially part of the Olympic Games and has been since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia.

There are an estimated 50 million Taekwondo practitioners worldwide.
